Guitar Chords: Mast Magan, 2 States [2014]

2 States seems to be one of the highly awaited movies of the year till now without any presence of the 3 Khan’s. The songs were recently released and one song that I really liked was Mast Magan. I am enjoying Chaandaniya too and it might be the next song I post here.

Mast Magan is a soft romantic number with a very ethereal feel. It is in the key of G major scale. One of my favorite guitar songs in the key of G is Time of your Life by Greenday. Almost all chords are common between these songs. Mast Magan has really simple chords and will be fun to play once you get the strumming right. Check out the chords you need to know to play this song:

G Cadd9 Dsus4 Am Em

The chords are usual but you maybe wondering what is Cadd9 chord? As the name suggests it is a standard C major chord with add9 added. So what does it mean? The C chord as you must be aware consists of C, E and G notes. If this doesn’t make sense, read this and brush up your basic music theory of chords. To get the add9 chord, you simply need to add the 9th note to the major chord. The 9th note is same as the 2nd note in higher octave. In the case of C major chord it would be the D note. On the guitar this note is present on the 3rd fret, 2nd string. An easy way to hold the Cadd9 chord is to hold the regular G chord and bring down the upper 2 fingers (index & middle) one string down. Play the chord, sounds beautiful and better than the regular C chord, isn’t it?

  C major scale:  C D E F G A B  1 2 3 4 5 6 7  8 9    Regular C major triad: C E G  To get the add9 chord, add 9th note (D).    So Cadd9 chord triad: C E G D

Next is the Dsus4 chord. Here is the D major scale:

  1 2 3  4 5 6 7  D E F# G A B C#    Major chord triad is formed by the notes 1, 3 and 5.    So D major triad is: D F# G    To get the Dsus4 chord, remove the 3rd note and replace it with the 4th note. So F# should be replaced with G.    So Dsus4 chord triad is: D G G

Why the Dsus4 chord instead of regular D? Maybe because the song is in the key of G and so ‘D G G’ sounds better than ‘D F# G’. But I am not sure. If anyone is aware of this do let me know in the comments.

What I am quite sure is that in the scale of G, the Cadd9 and Dsus4 chords often go hand in hand. The chords G, Cadd9 and Dsus4 or D are usually played together. The same chords are played in Time of Your Life, Greenday song. Why? Is there a rule? No, it just sounds good that’s all.

The 3rd stroke (DOWN) should be accentuated compared to other strokes. Play along with music to get the timing right.
