The song Mitwa from the movie Kabhi Alvida Naa Kehna is another gem from Shankar Ehsaan Loy (SEL) camp. In the key of E major scale, the song uses quite a few chords. But Ehsaan has done a lot of subtle variations to the chords that makes playing this song lot more difficult if you looking to sound like the recording track.
The song uses one trick or rather a form of chords that I have mostly seen used in English songs. One such song that comes to mind is Yellow by the band Coldplay which incidentally uses similar set of chords. The trick is to always keep the thinnest two strings (E and B) open. Even while playing barre chords. So instead of barring the fret using the index finger (which is what you normally do when playing barre chords), you just press the root note (on 6th or 6th string) and keep the index finger above the fret not touching it. It will be more clear once I show the chord finger positions.
I will post 2 different versions of chords – the easy one and the complex but more closer to original one. Take your pick.
Simple versions of the chords:
E A B F#m
G#m C#m D
Actual chords:
Esus2:4 Asus2:3 Bsus4:3 D
Instead of F#m and G#m, play F#m11 and G#m11. Here are the chord structures:
E----0-------0-----0-- B----0-------0-----0-- G----11------2-----4-- D----11------4-----6-- A----9-------4-----6-- E----x-------2-----4-- F#7sus4 F#m11 G#m11
Hold the chords like you normally hold the open E chord shape. Use thumb to hold the root note on 6th string. If you are finding it difficult, you can also leave the 6th string open but make sure you don’t play it. Or use the finger holding the 5th string to mute the 6th string.
Below strumming pattern can be used in most parts of the song:
|1&2&|3&4&|5&6&|7&8&| |D U| UD | U| UD |
At the starting of the song, following arpeggio plays out in the background:
$4 11 $3 9 $1 0 $2 0 $4 9 $3 8 $1 0 $2 0 $4 7 $3 6 $1 0 $2 0 $4 9 $3 8 $1 0 $2 0
